Updated 8 November 2008

This page is to put some flags out for items which I consider worth noting and which you might be interested in even before you see more about them within Small Scale Scene in Military Modelling Magazine itself.

As a modeller for many years now, I often make "something else for a change". I am sure I am not the only hobbyist like this, so for interests sake there may be things in here that are not just AFV related, but could cover aircraft, figures and even on occasion ships. I hope you will have a scan through, you never know what might attract your interest, and I make changes, add new bits anywhere down the list, they are not in any particular order.

For details of the manufacturers and where you can order the products, check the "Manufacturers" page where they are listed, along with any links to their sites, where I know they have them.

Diorama Accessories by Antenociti’s Workshop

(New 9/11/08)

Leaves…

Yes, leaves.  Among a number of scenic accessories, aimed at wargamers and model railway enthusiasts mainly, this range has some really useful bits and pieces for any diorama.  The pack I want to mention here is a Combi-Pack of Leaf Litter and Ivy Leaves.  You can buy packs of an individual type, but I like this one for having 3 different sub packs within the main one.  I also think you can get away with them in whatever scale you like, both large and small.  Say from 1/76th all the way up to 1/35th  Each tiny leaf shape piece has the shape of ivy leaves.  Other than that, there are 3 main colour variations.  One if a darker green, as in a live plant.  Fit these to the ground, to the side of a house or wherever.  The second is a faded green, dead leaves on the ground, or still on the vine.  The third pack has the orange/brown autumn colours which are ideal for a ground cover of dead leaves.  None of these are single flat colours, there is variation within them that gives a very realistic look to them for my eye.  I liked these when I first saw them on sale at the Colour wargames show at Newbury racecourse, last October.  Have a look at the website of www.barrule.com/workshop/ .

New Manufacturer, 1/72 Figures, Royal Navy

(New 9/11/08)

WW2 Royal navy Figures in 1/72 scale

Nice to bring news of another new manufacturer.  Gunthwaite Miniatures have started off with 8 sets, each of 3 figures.  All in basic standing poses, but in a variety of ranks and uniform styles.  I’ll be mentioning more about these within the magazine column itself, but for now, take a look at their website, on www.gunthwaite.co.uk .  All metal castings but some really excellent figures in small scale.  Great for crewing landing craft or whatever.

In 1/144, more from Wargames South

(New 9/11/08)

New vehicles and Figures

With their range of 1/144 vehicles and small (12mm scale) figures, these are really very nice indeed.  Among the equipment is one of their largest so far, the LVT-4, the Buffalo.  Then there is a r-done Jeep, along with a GMC 2.5ton truck among some others.  I’ll cover the whole list in the magazine column itself soon.  Add to this a set of German tank crew figures which are really very nice indeed.  Designed primarily for wargamers, but for collectors or dioramas, these are equally fine models.  Well done to Wargames South as ever.

New Manufacturer, Maco, release SWS in 1/72

(New 19/10/08)

New Injection moulded kit

Always good to see a new manufacturer, and this is by Matthias Conrad of MC-Modelbau in Germany.  A new range of plastic kits in 1/72 scale is good to see, especially when they are as good as this is, a model of the late war German Schwerer Wehrmacht Schlepper (SWS) half track.  At the time of writing this I haven’t finished building it, but it is started.  Fit of parts is going together well, and the parts are crisply moulded and well detailed.  No short-run kit here.  Link and Length track is provided, and this is very fine indeed when you get to the individual, alternating type links.  Cab detail is nice and overall this has to go down as one of the best debut models I can recall.

Bedford QL variants in 1/72 from IBG in Poland

(New 19/10/08)

5 Bedford trucks

More new injection moulded plastic kits as IBG have followed the first release of the Bedford QL GS and QLR Radio trucks with a Bofors Tractor, the QLT Trooper, and an Army Fire Service version.  They assemble well, though the chassis has a few very small parts involved that you just need to take care with, and I am not entirely sure that the proportions on the cab shape are quite right.  Nothing to put me off what I think are some excellent models though.

Dan Taylor Modelworks

(New 19/10/08)

Mulberry build-up

Following his models of the larger Landing Craft, sold under the Milicast banner, Danny Taylor is now selling a 1/72 model of Pegasus bridge, and keeping with the Normandy theme, has started on the components of the Mulberry harbour.  So far we have 3 different types of ‘Beetle’, which are the support floats for the sections of floating roadway which are also now available.  The beetles are in resin, while the roadway sections feature some major components in etched brass as well.  We wait to see which bit come next!

M35 truck in 1/72 from Academy

(New 19/10/08)

Modern era US Truck

Still a relatively small series of 1/72 plastic kits, but following their earlier WW2 era Dragon Wagon, Academy turned to the more modern M35 6x6 truck.  It’s an excellent kit which goes together very well.  Being of the Vietnam era, it cries out for conversion to a gun truck of that period I think.

Revell Hummer Ambulance in 1/72

(New 5/04/08)

New Hummer Release from Revell

Great to hear from Revell recently with their most recent release, a kit containing 2 Hummers.  This time we see not only the standard TOW armed version, but also one with the Maxi Ambulance body.  This was one I especially was keen to see in kit form, and they have done it well.  The same body is an ambulance, but also used for some command variants as well.  It has taken a few years for them to follow on from their first Hummer release, and during that time Dragon have done a number of twin Hummer kits so there is a natural thought to compare them.  Well, I reallt like the detail and presentation of the Revell kits, and they go together beautifully.  There are two major differences, and I am a little disappointed that Revell didn’t take the opportunity to make a couple of improvements in this new releases.  The first is that while some clear plastic is provided for you to cut out and use to glaze the windscreens (more than most kits over the years), but why not add moulded parts?  Secondly the tyres.  The tread pattern is not the characteristic chunky tyres seen on Hummers, and is best replaced by the aftermarket resin accessories by MIG productions.  Mind you, I am not over fond of the Dragon tyres either, so both have room for improvement.  However, great value and the 2 kits in the box is very useful.

Resicast

(New 5/04/08)

New 1/35 Conversions and Accessory sets

It is a few years since I built a couple of conversions on the 1/35 Bren Carrier from Tamiya, using update sets from Resicast.  Well, they have returned to the subject and revised those earlier sets.  The wading carrier is one in particular.  It includes some new track, which replaces those in the basic Tamiya kit, which when you compare them with what they should be like, only then do you discover how poor they are.  In addition, we see new stowage sets, one of which has parts for 2 carriers, and also has replacement parts fr the rear suspension, so the model sits right down at the back, due to the additional weight being carried.

Add some Sherman stowage sets, and Sherman wading trunking, and there are some relatively straightforward conversions available that will result in a very different looking model.  Especially good for all those interested in the NW Europe campaign of 1944/5.

Trident

(New 5/04/08)

New 1/87 kits

It has been some time since we saw anything from Trident, the 1/87 model manufacturer from Austria.  However, thanks to Trident there will be some featuring within the magazine column over the next couple of months.  Injection moulded plastic models in 1/87 of various marks of the Pz II and of the Sdkfz 250.  Add to that there are resin models of both Stug II and Pz III gun tank, a Matilda and a couple of smaller Landing craft.  Look out for these as they feature in the magazine.

…and more Dragon Announcements

(New 4/04/08)

Sdkfz 251 Stuka zu fuss, with 28cm rockets and metal launch crates.

Yet another variant on the Sdkfz 251 Ausf D chassis, this time with metal launch crates for the side mounted 28cm Nebelwerfer rockets.  The crates are all in fine etched brass.  Inner rails need to be fitted, as these were the adapters for the smaller rockets (larger ones were 32cm).  These are delicate and this will be fine work.  There is little to add about the excellent 251 itself, as this is a very fine kit, with excellent interior detailing as well.  These crates however are especially fine, and unless you are used to working with etched brass, this is not one I’d recommend for beginners.  However, it is the sort of thing that demonstrates how Dragon are targeting their kits towards experienced modelers in this case, which is recognition of what the market place is after I think.

More Dragon Announcements

(New 4/04/08)

Wading Sherman

Not seen it in the flesh yet, but a recent announcement is for another LCM3, but this time with a Sherman that has etched brass wading trunking.  This one should be well worth looking out for, especially if you have any interest in the Normandy landings, or the island hopping of the Pacific.

Forces of Valor, the Wittman Tiger 1
in 1/16th

(New 16/03/08)

Wittman’s Tiger

What has to be my prize winner for 2008 comes a ready made and painted collectors item from the Forces of Valor range by Unimax Toys in Hong Kong.  As a ready made and painted model, and not cheap by any standards (it costs over £300 in the UK), this is without doubt one of the most super models I have ever been fortunate enough to see.  They have re-created Tiger I number 007, the tank that was the mount of Michael Wittman and his crew when they met their end near Caen in August 1944.  The model comes complete with the 5 man crew, and re-creates that famous photo showing Wittman sitting in his black Panzer uniform on the gun barrel, surrounded by his crew, other than the one standing in front to take the photos.  The detail and the finish on the tank itself is excellent, and open up the engine deck to see the details inside.  Open the turret hatches and you will see the detail that is largely hidden away inside.  This is a chance to own in model form that famous image of the man with his tank and his crew.  Look out for this one, it is quite stunning, and is a limited collectors edition of only 1800 pieces.

More Dragon Announcements

(New 17/01/08)

First Figure set in Small Scale

Dragon have announced their first small scale figure set, with German Falschirmjager to sit on the back of a King Tiger.  Based on some photos in the Ardennes, and previously done in 1.35, these are now definitely announced for 1/72 release.  As and when they come out, I hope to bring more details in the magazine itself.

Other kits recently announced are: - the Stug III appears again, but this time as the 105mm armed Sturmhaubitze, and the Sdkfz 251/7 Ausf C with the little 2.8 cm pak.  Done in kit form this adds another 251 variant to their growng list of the variants on this chassis.

As for Dragon Armor, their ready made and painted series, there are the SuH 10.5, another Panther, the Sdkfz 251/7 Ausf 7 with 2.8cm Pak and the newest, the Russian marked Sherman M4A2976).  These are usually made to a high standard of finish so these will be neat when they appear in the shops.  I haven’t seen any of these yet, but hopefully will do, and then they’ll be featured within the magazine column.

Dragon Announce Bradley M6 Linebacker

(New 22/12/07)

Latest Bradley Variant

I know little about this one yet, other than it has been announced.  Uparmoured Bradley of course, but with a 4-missile Stinger launcher on the side of the turret.  Due out in early 2008.

Pegasus Bridge” -

on the way from Milicast

(New 22/12/07)

Pegasus Bridge

This large new resin cast diorama centerpiece should be ready for Trucks and Tracks 2008.  Mastered by Danny Taylor, and being produced with Milicast, this is based on the original bridge, which though now removed from the canal, is still there to see in the Pegasus Bridge Memorial (museum).  One of the most amazing stories of those opening moves of the D-Day landings, Pegasus Bridge will be an impressive model.  Watch this space…

Sgts Mess

(New 22/12/07)

New Manufacturer

Sgts Mess is a new venture, started by Gary and Ellen who used to work for SHQ.  When SHQ made the move to the West Country, it meant an opportunity for Gary and Ellen to start their own wargames figure and vehicle business, Sgts Mess.  Still a young range though the product range is expanding steadily.  All metal cast, look out for a series of Refugee (civilian) figures, along with M3 half-track variants, Dodge Weapons carriers and assorted Jeeps  There is a link to their website from their listing in the ‘Manufacturers’ page.

Sad News for 2007

(New 22/12/07)

Deaths this year

Really sad news this year that the death of John Baumann of MAFVA, a great Spanish Civil War enthusiast was followed by that of Mick Bell (whose scale drawing many will be familiar with) and then suddenly we lost Jim Marshall as well.  Jim had been behind BK Modelcraft and before that Convoy Models when it started, and made master models for a number of other manufacturers.  These are all great losses in such a short space of time.

Centurion Models28mm

(New 22/12/07)

WW2 and Modern

Two periods, but a new series of 28mm wargames vehicles and figures, in what is actually 1/56 scale.  Just a few modern subjects, but plenty of WW2, and some especially interesting looking models.  These include the little French half tracks and the large Lancia 3RO Italian trucks, with plenty for the Desert War subjects.  Contact details and web link you can find in the ‘Manufacturers’ page entry.

Bolt Action Miniatures

(New 22/12/07)

WW2

An extensive range of really very neat 28mm wargames vehicles and figures.  Most vehicle body parts are in resin, with smaller details cast in resin.  Vehicles usually include a base, though armoured cars such as the Humber come with a base (that has the 4 wheels cast integrally on it) or separate metal cast wheels, so no base.  Artillery pieces done in metal.  Details on the ‘Manufacturers’ page.

Dragon Stug III

(New 22/12/07)

Going the extra mile …

Well, Dragon have turned their hand to the Stug III, and we have the Ausf G as first release, which will be followed by the Sturnhaubitze armed 105mm.  There is backs of detail here, and includes the first time I can recall any detailing being affed to the underside of the mudguards in this way. Excellent stuff.

Dragon Shermans

(New 22/12/07)

More and more and more ….

Dragon have really been going to town with the Sherman tank variants this year.  The M4A3 with 76 mm is great, as is the cast hull M4A1 76mm and the M4A4.  What a surprise then to get the Tulip, which is an M4A4 plus 60lb aircraft rockets mounted on the turret ide, and as used by the Guards Armoured Division.  Then the HVSS M4A3E8 in both 76mm and 105mm armed versions.  More recently te M4A2 so Desert British equipment now in the list.

PDI Models is Shutting Shop…almost

(New 27/5/07)

PDI Models Calls it a Day, except for CMSC Products

PDI will remain the only online source for the CMSC (Continental Model Supplies) range of resin/metal models.

Though still a relatively young internet based model supplies business, Phil Smith at PDI Model Supplies has decided to call it a day with all the rest of the products he has dealt with.  I have to class this as a sad day, but understandable all the same..  I was one to receive this following e-mail today, 27 May 2007–

Dear Customer,

I am just writing to inform you that we have taken the decision to close down PDI Model Supplies.  This decision was taken after much soul searching, but it was decided that my home/full time work was beginning to suffer and therefore one part of my life had to be let go.

I would like to thank you for your past custom and let you know that with the exception of the CMSC range which I intend to keep selling all my remaining stock is being sold off with a 25% discount.

I am sure you will find something of interest on our web site, which I will try to keep up to date.

We will still accept the usual payment methods.

Thank you again and happy modelling in the future.

SMA Ceases Production

(New 27/5/07)

Scale Model Accessories Calls it a Day

Sadly another of our long term resin model production companies has decided to call it a day.  SMA (Scale Model Accessories), who did 1/35 scale vehicles and figures as well as the SSP (Small Scale Productions) series of 1/72 scale models, has decided to give up.  The good news for modelers is that the two ranges have been sold on, so are still available.  The 1/35 series has gone to Scale link, while the Small Scale Productions range is another one that has been added to the huge range now under the Matador Models label.

Thanks to Gordon Tweddle at SMA who has put so much into it, and the hobby, for some years now, and to wish him all the best for the future.

Blitzkrieg Models Belgian Vickers Utility Tractor

(New 25/4/07)

Vickers Utility Tractor

In 1/72 scale, and an all resin kit, this one is an excellent start to a new range of models.  There are two A4 sheets of instructions.  One has a number of assembly sketches, including templates so you can build the seat and ammo bin framework, as well as for the tiny instrument panel.  The second sheet of paper has some history and background information to the model, plus notes on the colours and markings, a full parts list as well as hints on resin kit construction.  Even more unusually, is an “errata” note, which highlights 2 minor errors in the kit, and how to correct them.  I have to say these are minor, and relate to the version it is intended to be.  I can’t remember many models which own up to an error, as well as tell you how to make the correction.  Well done to Ivan (the owner of Blitzkrieg Models) on this one.  The resin castings are cleanly cast, just some fine flash on some parts that needs to be removed.  Nothing you can’t do with a craft knife.  All the armour panels are separate parts, so there is lots of choice for how you want the finished model to look – opened up, closed up or whatever.  The end result is only a small model, but very useful for anyone who has an interest in the early war period.  Blitzkrieg Models, PO Box 50, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 2WH or e-mail ivan@blitzkrieg-models.fsnet.co.uk.

Academy 1/72 US M3 Half Track set

(New 25/4/07)

Half Track, Amphibious Jeep and Harley Davidson motor cycle

Well, it is fair to say that Academy are not turning out new small scale armour kits at the rates of Dragon or even Trumpeter, but wow they do still do a good job.  Their release schedule only adds one or two kits each year, but all so far have been very welcome indeed.  The latest to come from the Academy stable is a set containing a US M3 half-track, plus the smaller amphibious Jeep and lastly the Harley Davidson motorcycle.  More to the point, you get all three items in the same box, and all for just £7.99 here in the UK.  Actually it is the M3A1 half track, as it features the pulpit mounted .50cal and front mounted winch.  In addition, there are two side mounted .30cal mg’s included.  My full se of comments having built them you will find in the magazine.

AFV Club 1/48
Tiger 1

(New 15/12/06)

New 1/48 kit …

New from AFV Club is the late model Tiger 1, complete with moulded zimmerit finish.  Someone other than Dragon has managed the zimmerit finish at last, and done it very well.  Even etched brass engine deck screens are included as standard.  Beautiful model, well priced, and in the shops now.  I found mine at LSA Models here in the UK.  It builds up very well.

MMS 1/76 Sherman ARV Mk 1

(New 15/12/06)

Latest Sherman variant from MMS …

With so many modelers bemoaning the lack of Sherman variants for years, still there are those who miss out on trying metal models.  The MMS series of 1/76 models has been going for some years now, and has a great variety of Sherman variants in the range (a wider selection than currently available in plastic).  Their latest one is the ARV Mk 1, a turretless M4A4, complete with engineers fittings.  These include additional hull stowage and an A-Frame lifting gear.

Art-Toys 1/72 Mack NO

(New 15/12/06)

Another fine US Truck …

I love US trucks, in whatever scale.  The Mack NO is an impressive bit of kit even in real life, built to tow large artillery pieces such as the US 155 gun.  This resin cast model is very finely done, and includes a tilt for the cab.  Please note also that the manufacturer, Art-Toys in Belgium, have moved and hence changed their address.

Dragon 1/35 M2 US half-track

(New 15/12/06)

At last …

I have yet to see it properly, but the sprues were all on display at Euro Militaire last September.  Dragon have finally turned to the US half track series and begun with the M2/M2A1.  The difference centres around the pulpit machine gun mount on the A1 version.  It looks as if this will be the start of a beautiful series of models.  The pieces to check out that I recall most are the sprocket wheels, which are amazing bits of injection moulding.  Dragon have advanced the whole technique in recent years, and these are the benefits to show from it.

Dragon 1/72 Sdkfz 251’s

(New 15/12/06)

Hanomags galore ….

I have been one of those longtime fans of the Sdkfz 251 series.  It was produced in some 24 major different versions, and Dragon seem to be well on their way to covering these.  The basic SPW troop carrier version is done in both Ausf C and later Ausf D types.  Then there are the Nebelwerfer launcher, the engineers, the mortar carrier and no doubt other to come.  The detail, especially within the fighting compartment, is about the best I have ever seen in this scale.  I for one can’t wait for them to bring out each variant.  Well done Dragon, I like these a lot!

Milicast 1/72 LCI(L)

(New 15/12/06)

Landing Craft ….

The LCI(L) is the Landing Craft Infantry (Large), which has now been released by Milicast.  I am building this up for a feature in Military Modelling Magazine itself.  Suffice to say a resin cast hull and fittings, which can be built into either the UK or US variants of the ship.  Also included are large frets of etched brass parts, along with specially produced transfer sheet for the various options given in the extensive instruction booklet.  By a long way, this is the biggest and most complex Milicast model to date.

CMSC 1/72 Starstreak

(New 15/12/06)

New Multi-media model of the Air Defence Variant on the CVR(T) chassis

The Starstreak uses the newer Stormer chassis, which has the extra road wheel compared with the earlier CVR(T) variants.  The bulk of the model is made from neat polyurethane resin castings, while the wheels, lengths of track and detail fittings are metal.  Comprehensive assembly instructions are provided and it goes together well.  The basic Stormer is available in the range as well.  A reminder that for those interested in ordering via the web, the CMSC range can only be obtained via PDI Model Supplies.

Trumpeter 1/72 Shermans

(New 15/12/06)

More Sherman Types

I don’t think I’m being unkind if I say these are “a mixed bag’.  The plus point is the inclusion of two types of suspension within the kit, either to be built in the ‘normal’ way, or simplified single piece mouldings of each set of bogies.  If it makes it easier and encourages youngsters or those who are otherwise unable to assembly the more complex alternatives, then this is to be applauded.  The detail on the cast hull M4 is somewhat soft, and the angle of the front plate just doesn’t look right on the basic M4.  On the other hand, the detail on the later M4A3E8, with the HVSS suspension is neatly done.

Dragon 1/72 Shermans

(New 15/12/06)

3 New Sherman kits on the market

Through out the year we have seen a regular stream of new releases from Dragon and they have finally turned their hands to the Sherman series.  Not a surprise I suppose, but modelers I think can be pleased by all three that we have seen so far.  Their first releases have been the M4A3 (76mm), the Firefly VC, and the cast hull M4A1.

BK Modelcraft cease Production

(New 15/12/06)

Model production ends

Another producer who has stopped production during 2006 has been Jim Marshall BK Modelcraft.  The good new however, is that the range of models has been added to that of Matador Models.  Check out their list as the models are gradually added.

Trux Models are ceasing production

(New 18/01/06)

Trux is shutting down model production

For the beginning of 2006 comes the sad news that Mike is shutting down the model production side of Trux Models.  The range is being sold on and you will be able to get a number of their range will become available within the ranges of Bull Models, BW Models and I believe, Matador Models.  There have been some very interesting models in the range over the years, not all still available anyway, but sad to see them go.  Thankfully the main range is being passed to other manufacturers so it isn’t really the end.  Watch out for news from the new producers.

MMS Models have moved

(New 18/01/06)

New Contact Address and location

Some modelers may have seen the notice on the MMS website that the MMS business is for sale.  So far this has not resulted in a deal being done, so the owner, Barry Walby has now moved production from the workshop in Cambridgeshire where he was so it is now closer to his own new home in Kent.  So a new contact address for MMS (see the manufacturers listing) but still ‘under the original management’.

AB Figures “must have” BMWs

(New 18/01/06)

Latest BMW m/c combinations and crews

Among recent releases from AB Figures are some BMW combinations and crews which I put in the category of “must get”, along with some new half figures of US tank crew.  I’ve seen 3 different combinations with the BMW and crew, and all are really delightful for the characterization o the crews.  One has a basic two man rider and passenger in the sidecar, both in the rubberized motorcycle coats.  A second has a 3 man crew of Fallschirmjager, with the third figure being the pillion rider on the rear seat of the bike, clutching the hand hold.  Uniform and detail is just so neatly done.  Favourite is number three however (save the best for last!) and here a 3 man crew are relaxing.  The bike rider is off the bike and standing and stretching after what must have been a tiring trip.  Again, the characterization of the three makes for a scene all by themselves.

Finally a set of half figures for US tank crew.  This follows an earlier set of German ones, and are designed for crewing resin or metal tank models with open hatches.  Ten US tankers in the set, each one different, so you could fit out up to 10 tanks, or combine 1, 2, 3 or 4 in just just one AFV.  The results once again are delightful and work every bit as well for 1/72 scale models as they do for 1/76.

New 1/72 bases

(New 18/01/06)

Astra Models

New to me, a Canadian producer with a new series of resin cast diorama bases.  Three sizes available, small medium and large.  All are beautifully cast to a high standard.  The smallest ones are OK for smaller vehicles like Jeeps, Carriers, m/cycles etc, while the medium size is good for the likes of the early Panzers I and II or a German or Allied half-track.  You’ll want the large size if you want to put out a Tiger, gun and towing combination or the likes of modern Challenger and Abrams.  The large base comes with an optional part for a wall or Church wall, or you can buy separately a building section as an alternative.  Quality of casting is excellent, and these roads and roadsides are just a very neat and simple base for displaying your models, and with the cobbled roads check out the detail of the roadsides.

Cromwell Models move into 1/72

(New 23/10/05)

Marder 3 and Merkava

Seen first at Euro Militaire, Cromwell are moving some models into 1/72 scale, in their Combat ready series.  The Merkava was first to be completed, and the Marder III was well under way, and the hull was on display at their stand, showing the size differential with the 1/76 equivalent.

The Chieftain went through 12 different marks, as it went through various stages of upgrade.  A new resin cast conversion kit from Matador Models allows you to make about any variant you choose, using the Aiurfix kit of the early Mark2 as the starting point.  It includes a new section of rear engine deck, which was a noticeable difference.  For the later marks, like the 11 and 12, with their Stillbrew armour, two panels of Stillbrew need to be added.  I fabricated mine from two pieces of moulding sprue within the set, using phots to guide me for shape and position.  All in all though, a very welcome conversion, that gives a useful upgrade to the old Airfix kit.

New from Ace Models in 1/72

(New 31/8/05)

RSO Tractors

Recent releases from the Russian based manufacturer Ace have turned to WW2 subjects as well as their modern Russian equipment.  The German RSO tractor has been released in 2 versions.  One, with the rounded cab, is the basic load carrier which assembles pretty well.  The fit if the cab roof needed some filler for me, so as ever with these limited run injection moulded kits, take your time with the preparation of the parts during assembly.  Most notable however has been the move to provide some really delightful etched brass track.  This has a much better, and I think easier, construction than their plastic link and length examples in the early kits, some of which let down otherwise fine models (the T55 comes to mind)  The second kit is of the flatter Einheits cab Ambulance version.  Again it has the etched track.  Worth looking out for these.

Dragon 1/35 Sdkfz 251s

(New 31/8/05)

Very complete kits!

As promised, Dragon have delivered with their growing range of 1/35 models of the Sdkfz 251 series.  I’ve seen a couple, but still have to get assembly underway, but wow am I impressed!  I can’t comment on the fit of parts yet as I haven’t got far enough with the assembly.  But just opning the box shows the full nature of it, particularly with their 3-in-1 versions.  The one kit allows you to make one of thre quite defferent types.  Added in are a new style individual link track, which saves you the laborious task of having to remove and clean up each piece from the sprue.  This is a definite plus.  Then there is the inclusion of one of their figure sets (differs between the different kits) and additional accessories likes a whole series of mines and explosives in the 251/7 engineer.  Add turned brass shells and width indicators plus etched brass parts and more besides.  These really are very ‘complete’ in the box, and easily give you the complete heart of a diorama.  Do check these out.

Recent 1/72 kit releases from Dragon

(New 31/8/05)

Ready Made or Kits?

What seems to be a regular stream of new releases in small scale, including both the kits and the ready made and painted examples.  The ready made models really are excellent, and I think offer super value for money.  I can think of many modelers who would like to be able to get this good a finish on their models.  Especially so with the German 3-colour camo schemes.  The kits are also neat, and have pioneered the inclusion of zimeritt finishes on the hull parts in some kits.  Look out for the Tiger 1’s, Elephant and Jagdpanther.  The likes of the E100 and Jagdpanther even include etched brass engine deck screen.

1/48 Citroen from Tamiya

(New 31/8/05)

Interesting Subject choice from Tamiya …

The little Citroen car came as a surprise release to me in their new 1/48 range.  It is quick and simple to make up, but somehow this has always had an instant visual impression on me. Maybe from films, then they were used as the black saloons of the Gestapo or in the roughly painted Free French symbols that these are seen covered with in photos of captured vehicles during the liberation of Paris.  Marking choices are for civilian, German or French Army examples.  I wonder what other suprises they have in store for us?

New Figure sets from AB Figures

(New 31/8/05)

New ones out and more new ones due …

Due for the near future are German Falschirmjager, including some motor-cyle combination crews that look just magic.  In the meantime, there are other new releases already on sale.  These include some new British 25lber gun crews, Italian AFV crew figures, German Casualty set (to go with British and US ones already done) plus some British paratroops.  The animation and detail on all these will really repay a good paint job.

Matador Bedford QLR Conversion

(New 31/8/05)

Resin Conversion Set for the Airfix Bedford QL

A resin 1/76 conversion set from matador is I think one of their best yet.  It uses the cab and chassis from the Bedford QL in the Airfix Refueller set, and gives you the replacement body for a Radio (or QLR) variant.  It also includes all the radios, seats etc of the interior detail.  It cries out to have figures put in and around it in a diorama.  Do check this oneout.

Forces of Valor

(New 31/8/05)

Ready Made and Painted in small scale

I have recently seen a couple of early releases in the new small scale range of ready made and painted models from Forces of Valor.  Clearly there is no construction involved, as these come made and painted straight out of the box, in 1/72 scale.  If I am honest, then the purist modeller can find faults.  However, I suspect those of us will want to make our own anyway.  For me these have a number of attractions,

Latest ones are the Challenger II, King Tiger, Tiger I and Bradley.  These represent really good value for money I believe.  Once again the purist modeler can find fault, more with the Tigers thanks to the black tyre, incorrectly painted around the resilient steel roadwheels.  However, that isn’t too difficult to remedy.  All in all tese are finished to a very good standard, and if it encourages youngsters to buy these and play with them, then all well and good.  In time they may still get interested and choose that they would like to make their own.  Wargamers can get them straight onto the table, and those who don’t have the time and patience to finish their own kits, then these are well worth checking out.

Starmers Armour do new Sherman Transfer Sets

(New 8/4/05)

2 New NW European sets of markings for Shermans

A slight change with the two latest sets of transfers from Starmers Armour. Instead of what are best described as 'generic' sets of markings, these two contain markings for complete, documented vehicles. The first has US and Allied Shermans (12 of them), and the second has British and Canadian Shermans (14 of them). Very good quality transfer sheets, with loads of colourful markings on. Instructions sheets are provided that have colour profiles, along with a sheet of historical notes. Reasonably priced, these represent first class value for money. A slight change in style to do complete vehicles in this way for them, but one which I am confident will prov popular with most modellers. Presentation is a fine example for hoiw it can be done, and they certainly provide some colour to what are otherwise plain drab Sherman variants.

New range from Milicast

(New 20/2/05)

"Battlefield" series

This is a new addition to the Milicast product line, as they have started a series of 1/76 resin models, but with fewer parts. It is simplest to liken them to the Combat Ready range by Cromwell, as the running gear and such like are all moulded integrally with the hull, and the number of smaller parts remaining for the modeller to fit is reduced considerably. All of the ones listed so far are available individually, or in packs of three, aimed clearly at the wargamers market. It will be operated alongside their original "Premier" range and all the subjects are from models already in that original series. More news to come, but so far the line includes a number of Russian tanks and German half-tracks (250 and 251 series).

Goffy Models 1/35 and 1/72

(New 20/2/05)

Resin Models and Accessories from Moredun Models

A range of resin accessories and conversions new to me, but from the UK importer, Moredun Models in Scotland. Some 1/35 vehicle conversions, such as for the Israeli uparmoured Zelda (M113) and some 1/72 accessories such as US backpacks, ideal to equip the US vehicles seen in the Gulf. Very good quality castings, and one accessory set includes packs, kit-bags, jerricans, US rifles and US Kevlar helmets. Very nicely done and very cleanly cast. These look excellent. The range is another from the Czech Republic.

New 1/35 Centurian by Legend Models

(New 20/2/05)

Centurian Mk 5

Legend is a range of resin kits and conversions from Korea, and imported by Moredun Models again. A large range now but I have now seen the first full 1/35 kit from them that I have looked at, the Centurian Mk 5. My interest in this particular mark of 'Cent' is that is was the one used by the Australian army in Vietnam. Really superb resin castings, plus etched brass parts and wire, tow rope all included. Photo illustrated assembly instructions are included. This one awaits building up but first reactions are excellent.

Colourcoats new British Colours

(New 23/1/05)

New Enamel paints for British Colours

Coulorcoats is a growing range of enalmel paints from White Ensign Models. An extensive series of colours for ships but more recently they did the first series of armour colours (see lower down this page) but now 17 new colours are avaialbe. Best of all these are all British colours, both modern and WW2. I understand they have been developed with the help of Mike Starmer of MAVFA, who has made a point of researching British armour colours. Here we have colours such as British Gulf Sand, with that characteristic yellow shade to it. Also the modern British Army green, which gets the colour just right to my eye. Other colours include the older Bronze Green, a WW2 Light Stone and Blue Black disruptive. Do stir them well and you need to apply a couple of coats, but the colours are great. And good quality paint. Available direct from WEM (see details and link on 'Manufacturers' page).

Roden 1/72 Puma

(New 23/1/05)

New cat on the prowl

Roden are making their way through the series of German 8-wheel armoured cars, and now we have the first of the later ones, which feature the raised engine deck, the later single piece mudguards, and of course the bigger 50mm turret mounted gun. Very nicely done injection mouldings, with additional detail in terms of steering arms on the suspension units over the earlier kits, and more unusually that the stowage bins in the mudguards are open, with separate parts for the bin doors. This offers great potential for dioramas and is a neat touch I think.

Cromwell, new 1/76 Combat Ready

(New 6/1/05)

New Releases

Three new release to mention. First place must go to the Panzer III Ausf A. This is the early variant with the 5 larger road wheels and is the first model I can recall of this early version.

Another WW2 subject is the Marder III, a Pz 38t chassis with the Russian 76.2mm gun mounted centrally on the chassis with an armoured shield. The two characteristic crew sets and the rear basket are done very neatly indeed. An excellent end result.

At the same time, a modern Israeli variant of the M113, but almost unrecognisable thanks to the huge "tobelerone" style side armour panels, and protective screens for the top hatches as well.

Revell, new 1/72 Famo

(New 6/1/05)

Sdkfz 9 Famo

Coming out just at the end of December is the third new release inside a month, as Revell do their 1/72 version of the Famo half-track. One of the larger kits in the Revell small scale range, and the last of their planned releases for 2004. It makes up very well indeed, with link and length track, and good level of detail. Even the tread pattern of the front tyres is good, in contrast to the poor result in their Hummer. With lots of detail in the cab area, with tools and even the rifle racks, it goes together without any problems. You will need to assemble the three main subassemblies and paint these before doing the final assemble of the 3 main sections.

Only odd bit is actually a bonus, as despite not being featured on the instructions, and even with a note from Revell acknowledging this, they include all the parts for the rear earth anchor spade as well. I suspect we will soon see both the tilt covers and a crew for it being released by one or more of the after-market manufacturers. It also has a tow bar so you can fit it up to a Panzer III or suchlike.

Revell new 1/35 Leopard 2 A6

(New 3/12/04)

Latest Leopard

Revell also do some fine 1/35 kits, even to touches like including a couple of rounds of main gun ammunition (2 each of two types) and a couple of wooden ammo boxes. These are the sort of touches we expect to get from the aftermarket resin companies, but here we see Revell picking up on it and including them in the base kit. I've not had a chance to make this one yet, but it certainly looks good, with crisp detail and I expect it to assemble pretty well. With the highly angled plates on the turret, it gives this previously very 'slab sided' AFV a very different look. Equally, the German army 3 colour scheme does make for an interesting paint finish.

Panzer Shop, 1/35 'IDF' VT-55KS

(New 3/12/04)

VT-55KS Recovery Vehicle for the IDF

This is the first model I have seen from this Czech based model producer. A full kit, in resin, but with etched brass parts and the metal cast Fruil tracks for the T-55. Based on a T-55 hull, these were captured by the IDF and put into service. The model has all the additional IDF fittings for this recovery variant. Even a CD is included with loads of photos and disc copies of the instructions, which are comprehensive. Thanks go to Lou Stener, the UK importer for introducing me to this manufacturer.

Masters Productions, 1/35 Chevrolet 1½ ton truck

(New 3/12/04)

Chevrolet 1½ ton Cargo Truck

Earlier releases in the range of resin models were conversions, particularly for the Tamiya GMC. This time however, a complete kit. All cast in a cream polyurethene resin this one is really delightful. I'm in the middle of building it up at the moment , and it goes together just as well as any plastic kit. It's that much smaller than the GMC, though similar in it's overall 'look', though with just the single rear axle. A hard top cab and a full tilt are all supplied in this kit.

Bull Models release 2nd 1/76 vehicle model

(New 15/08/04)

YMCA Mobile Canteen

A small Ford mobile canteen, a resin model complete with appropriate transfers and a couple of ladies to provide the 'crew', I think we often forget how important things like hot drink and something to eat can be so important. This is their second release and follows on from their Beaverette MkI and figures, all from the early war period.

New from Legend, 1/72

conversion for M48

(New 15/08/04)

Vietnam M48 sandbags and stowage set

This is the second accessory set I am aware of from Legend Models, which are imported to the UK by Moredun Models in Scotland. This cleanly cast resin set has additional 'sandbag armour' for the turret of an M48, plus additional stowage items such as track links, boxes and bedrolls, plus a xenon searchlight to fit on the mantlet. All to go with the Italeri (ex-ESCI) M48 this is a great little accessory set if you want an example of a typical Vietnam era M48.

Trumpeter 1/72 Ferdinand

(New 15/08/04)

First 1/72 releases from Trumpeter

My thanks go to Pocketbond, who are the UK importer for Trumpeter Models from China. This is the first 1/72 kit they have done and I have to say I am impressed. It is more complex, and more detailed I thought than the Dragon example. Even etched brass parts are included for the engine deck screens. More work in the assembly, but still the older style single piece tracks. This is one I will put more detail into Military Modelling, within the column.

New 1/144 models from Dragon

(New 15/08/04)

Now in Kit Form

Dragon started releasing some boxed, ready made and painted AFVs a little time ago now. The latest development is that you can now buy these in kit form, and usually in pairs. A couple I have include a Tiger 1 Along with a Maus, and perhaps (or maybe not) unexpectedly, a couple of versions of the Karl mortar, one with a Panther and another with some crew figures. Not complex by any means, but actually quite fun to put together. Etched parts are included for engine deck screens, though I found these would be very difficult to fit owing to the moulded on detail, or at least this was true of the Tiger. Nevertheless, something a bit different, and worth keeping an eye open for.

New 1/144 models from Trumpeter

(New 15/08/04)

New Ready Made and Painted range

Ready made and painted AFV models in this smaller scale seems to be catching on. Now Trumpeter have got in on the act, and we see some very well priced little models that come packed in their own tiny display case. A variety of modern AFVs, including M1 Abrams (gun tanks, with mine plough and mine rollers), both T55 and T72 (again some with mine clearing gear), and in the case of the T55, with a dozer blade as well. For WW2 fans, so far a few variants of the Sdkfz 251 Ausf D. They come in a mixture of colours and markings and look really very neat, and very reasonably priced here in the UK. Pocketbond are the importer, but dealers include both Moredun Models in Scotland and Pol Models in London.

New Warrior ARRV conversions from CMSC

(New 15/08/04)

Resin and Metal Conversion set for the Revell Warrior

Latest resin and metal conversion from CMSC has the Warrior Armoured Repair and Recovery variant. A new upper hull plus all the new turret and crane parts give you the fourth variant for the Revell kit of the basic Warrior. This one adds to the Command, AOP and uparmoured Infantry vehicles. Both the resin and metal parts are cleanly cast to a high standard. Thanks to CMSC for my example. You can buy them on the web via PDI Model Supplies.

New 1/72 HMMV from Revell

(New 15/08/04)

Latest kit is a Twin Set of Hummers

Latest arrival from Revell in their series of fine 1/72 kits is of the US HMMV (High Mobility Military Vehicle). On the whole it is up to the standards we have come to expect, though on this occasion there are a couple of details that many modellers might be disappointed with. The main one is the relatively poor representation of the tyres on the Hummer, which are I think one of the characteristic features on it. There is scope here now for the aftermarket manufacturers to release a good set of nice "blocky" tread wheels for these. Equally, no detail on the inside of the doors might disappoint as well. Having said all that, there are two kits, with two major variants and buckets of conversion potential on the basic body. Detail on the chassis and body is very good, and I found assembly straightforward. With two in the box, this one has got to be good value for modellers.

New AB Figures

(New 15/08/04)

Great figure sets for Dioramas

Just a note to say look out for some of the new figure sets by AB Figures. A number were done especially for the big Normandy diorama that the London branch of MAFVA have done for the IWM (Imperial War Museum) at Duxford. More details will be appearing in Small Scale Scene itself, in Mil Mod.

New Maus in 1/72 from Pegasus

(New 15/08/04)

New Manufacturer

Pegasus is a new manufacturer to the scene, and from California. Their first injection moulded kit is the German Maus. Very neatly moulded, with a minimum of flash and the suspension is delightful. I found assembly quite straightforward and that multitude of roadwheels very well done. Do paint the inside of the hull black before you fit top and bottom sections together though, as there is a lot to see through the engine deck grills. Detail is good and this is an impressive opening shot. I hear tell of a Pershing being worked on next. Thanks again to the UK importer Pocketbond for bringing it to my attention, but you can find it in the shops now.

Dragon 1/72 ready made AFVs

(New 15/08/04)

What a great finish!

The recent batch of releases in this series has made up versions of what they also sell as kits. Many modellers will still want to make their own kit, but with prices less than £10 here in the UK, the camouflage finishes on these models is enough to make many modellers wish they could do them this well. Camouflage, markings and basic weathering are all there, and some beautiful airbrush finish on the 3-colour German camouflage schemes. Do check out the Jagdpanther, the King Tigers and the 3-colour scheme Abrams with mine plough for good examples.

Dragon 1/72 kits from

(New 15/08/04)

First Injection Moulded zimmeritt

The first I saw of the new 1/72 Dragon Tiger 1 was at the MAFVA show at Duxford. I had heard it was coming but seem unable to ever get a response to enquiries from Dragon themselves. Still, the first example I know of an injection moulded plastic kit which has the zimmeritt finish moulded in place. I also have to say how effective I think it looks. Dragon have taken a bit of a step forward with this one, and proved not only that it can be done, but done well. Until now you either has a resin model (of which there are many excellent examples) or a painstaking task to add it yourself by hand.

New AS90s in 1/76 from Cromwell Models

(New 20/06/04)

Combat Ready New releases

For modern British armour enthusiasts, good news that the AS90 is now available from Cromwell Models as part of their Combat Ready series of 1/76 models. A few more parts than usual, with track units separate for a change. Even better news, choice of models for the original AS90 or the upgraded Braveheart variant, which has the longer gun barrel, but is otherwise externally the same.

Also new is a Crusader AA tank.

Lammercraft Miniatures 1/76 figures

(New 15/06/04)

New Manufacturer

Lammercraft figures are a new series of metal cast 1/76 scale figures from the hands of a well known sculptor, Tony Boustead. Up until now Tony has mastered figures for many other manufacturers, which he continues to do, but this is "himself". I'll be covering them in more detail in Military Modelling, but suffice to say a number of German, British and US tank Crews, plus some German SS figures, and they offer some great diorama potential. Whether it is the British crew at a graveside, along with a padre, the tank riders watching out for 'Jabos', or the US crewman having a pee.

WEM paints

(New 15/06/04)

New Range of Armour Colours

White Ensign Models (WEM) have been about for some years, and they specialise in model ships. Connected with this they have an extensive range of enamel paints for ship colours. However, more recently they have added some 17 armour colours to their full range with now has about 250 different paints. These include a large number of German WW2 colours, and for most recently, both the US and British sand colours used in Iraq during GW2. Most are good matt colours, and a couple satin which then needs a matt varnish. I am really impressed with the colours, and again there will be more on these in Small Scale Scene in Military Modelling over the next couple of months.

Mirage 1/72 Grant & Lee Models

(New 15/06/04)

New Series

Great news that the first of the M3 series from Mirage models is now on sale. These injection moulded plastic kits are very well presented, and the first two each include a small etched fret of parts as well. It has been a long time since the old Airfix kit, and these are a great improvement, with potential for more variants to come. The M31 recovery type is one illustrated on the box.

New 1/72 from Verlinden Productions

(New 15/06/04)

Sign of Small Scale Popularity

After many years we have finally seen Verlinden Productions move to the area of 1/72 diorama accessories. They have done aircraft stuff in this scale before, but now we see the first small scale version of the Biber submarine that they already do in the larger 1/35 (so, more to come?), along with US bridging pontoons and bridge and street bits coming along as well. Produced to their usual high standards of resin casting and presentation, I expect we'll see a lot more of these in competition entries and dioramas through this year. Available in the UK via Historex Agents as ever.

Bison 1/72 AFV Transfers

(New 13/03/04)

Bison Decals (was AFV Decals)

New sets of small scale transfers launched under a new name of Bison Decals, and from the same source as what was AFV Decals. Now printed for them by Microscale in the US (who are behind a huge range of aircraft decal sheets). The quality is good. They have markings for complete vehicles, and a number of different ones on each set. All are for the NW Europe period of '44/'45. One for "Recce" has 17 vehicles, including the Tetrarch, M3A3, Morris LRC, Humber Scout, Staghound and others. Another for "Cromwell" (including recovery), Centaur and Comets - 11 complete vehicles. Then "Wolverine" has 10 SP guns including Sexton, Achilles, Archers and Crusader AA. Finally Firefly Vc has 9 British Sherman variants, including the DD, the Crab and others as well as the Firefly.

New from MMS in 1/76

(New 13/03/04)

New at Trucks and Tracks

Among 4 new releases to be found on the MMS stand at Folkestone were two brand new chassis types, with a Russian Konsomlets tractor (with trailer) and a Marmon Herrington armoured car, the Mk II. The other two models are another Sherman variant - the M4A1(76) W, and a Cruiser CS, both of which are further variants on earlier releases. Top quality metal castings as ever.

PG Models 1/150 range

(New 13/03/04)

Return to the Market

Paul Gandy was behind some small 1/150 resin models some years ago, which essentially then disappeared from the market place. Great to find them back, though now with models cast in metal (pewter). So far just 5 models, the Sultan, Spartan, FV 432, Sherpa van and a Land Rover. Plans are to bring back the earlier models as well, which means things like the Bedford MK, the Foden and the Land Rover Ambulance. These are very neat models, and of course go well with N-gauge train sets.

Historex Agents get 1/72

(New 13/03/04)

Aber and 'Army in Detail'

Up until now Historex Agents have not dealt with small scale, but they are now handling the turned brass barrels and ammo rounds from both Armo and a new manufacturer to me, 'Army in Detail'. Well priced these are high quality products. I'll be featuring more detail in the magazine column, but as Historex Agents have a great reputation for good service, this is good news for small scale enthusiasts.

New Milicast 1/76 kits

(New 13/03/04)

New and Updated Models

Another series of new Japanese subjects, and some unusual ones as well. The command tank based on the Type 97, as well as the gun tanks, the bulkier Type 89, the Type 95 and the amphibious Ka-Mi. For the British fans, then early and late Sextons have been added.

More of their fine figure sets which are new, and they have completely remodelled a couple of their earlier kits, both the Pershing and the Sherman Jumbo.

Matador Models 1/76 Hummer and DD

(New 13/03/04)

Complete Kits

Cleanly cast in resin, and in 1/76 (rather than 1/72) scale, many modellers will be pleased to see this one. In a modular style production, it is clearly designed to allow other variants to be released later. The first one is the basic weapons carrier, with the hard top. Well detailed and the end result look excellent. Just add some suitable crew figures

At the same time, they have also released a complete kit (rather than a set of conversion parts) for the DD Sherman.

Cromwell Models 1/76 Combat Ready

(New 18/03/04)

On Sale Now ...

WW2 subjects include US M3 half tracks (look out for the set of 3 fully stowed ones later in the year); different variants of the Windsor carrier, with gun or trailer accordingly; Dorchester Hi-Power; and Pz III J with short or long barrels.

Modern subjects include the British Scorpion and Schimitar (CVR(T)) plus the US V100 armoured car for Vietnam

.... And coming very soon ....AS90

Revell 1/72 Porsche Turret Tiger II

(New 13/03/04)

On Sale now

The first of their listed releases in 1/72 armour models this year, the Tiger II with the Porsche turret is now in the shops. The same basic hull as their earlier Henschel turreted kit, but the smoother lines of the Porsche version (as seen on the real one at Bovington) is neatly captured here. With link-and-length track as usual for Revell, it makes up well. Later in the year we are expecting the M60A3, a HUMMER (should be great), the Eloka, the Fennek and the Famo.

SHQ 1/76 Various new Armour Models

(New 13/03/04)

Japanese, US Armour and ...

A recent batch of releases have Japanese subjects, with 4 AFVs and 4 guns, plus some Japanese figures and gun crews being done as well. All metal castings and really look very neat. Not large number of parts, so not difficult to put together. Add the crew figures and they look really good. Includes the Type 95, the Type 97 and the little Type 94 tankette with trailer.

For US units, then the Priest, The m10 and M36, the GMC 6x6 and the 105mm howitzer. The Studebaker 6x6 for Russian units and the Priest and Achilles for British units.

Mission Models 1/35 .50 cal belted rounds

(New 13/03/04)

Ultimate Detail Accessory

I found these sets on sale at Trucks and Tracks. Individual turned brass .50 cal rounds (yes they are tiny!) Along with Y-shape photo etch pieces (equally tiny!) Which need to be bent round at each end, and then thread in the ammo rounds, and create a belt of linked rounds. Some fine work needed but the end result will be stunning. Available from MissionModels.com

Ace Models 1/72 T72

(New 13/03/04)

Latest releases see further improvements

There continues to be a regular stream of new releases from Ace Models, in their series of limited run modern (mainly) Russian subjects. The latest is the T72 and I have to say how impressed I am by the great improvements in the moulding of the roadwheels and tracks. It was this that let their T55 series down from being really excellent. The latest T72 has options for the 6 or 8 'spoke' style road wheels, and they are really neatly moulded, without the flash or 'angles' on the wheels that need cleaning up. Just clean up where they attach to the sprue and away you go. The same applies to the individual track links as well. It's a good sign of how techniques improve for manufacturers as they gain more experience. This really shines through on this one.

Revell 1/72 Type VIIC U-Boat

(New 14/12/03)

Now Available!

Something a bit different from the usual topics I cover, but linked largely thanks to being 1/72 scale. Revell have released a huge, but not difficult, plastic kit of a "Grey Wolf". The Type VIIC was the most common U-Boat in WW2 and the possibilities this new kit opens up are just huge, like the model. Intended for a display stand, with a number of different options for specific boats included in the box, I suspect we will soon see some cut down to waterline dioramas, alongside a dockyard wall, or entering the mouth of a concrete pen.

Mouldings are overshadowed by the size of the two hull halves, each with good external details. Even the forward torpedo tube outer doors can be fitted open or closed (dry-dock scenario?). The deck detail is delightful, as is the conning tower, which has bags of detail included. I'd be surprised if the resin producers such as Verlinden or MIG don't pick up on this, with crew figures, detail sets for loading the torpedoes through the deck casing or changes to the Flak mountings and conning tower for yet more variants. Now, how about getting right up close, with a Flower Class corvette riding up and over as it rams a surfaced U-Boat? Now that really would be impressive!

MMS T34 Flakvierling, 1/76

(New 14/12/03)

New for December 2003

In with recent releases is the T34 Flakvierling. This uses the main hull from the T34 that MMS had already done, and added their fine Flakvierling (again which they had already done) and combined the two along with new detail parts for the makeshift turret (made I believe from armour taken off knocked out Sdkfz 251s) plus ammo stowage on the hull. All in metal as ever, and with all their customary detail and quality castings.

In the same batch of releases are the 105mm SP Wespe, the British Cruiser Mk IVA/IVA CS, the British Commer Q2 van, and the Russian 45 mm M42 AT gun.

Monty's Caravans in 1/35 by Wespe

(New 24/9/03)

New Map Caravan ...

Following on from their earlier release of the Leyland Retriever, Wespe Models have now done the second of Monty's 3 caravans, the Map Caravan. This articulated trailer comes with the Fordson 7V Tractor unit. Just like the Retriever, it comes complete with internal detail to the caravan body. All resin cast these are neat kits. All we await now is the Mack to complete the trio ... Look out for more in Mil Mod.

New C7P kits from Mirage in 1/72

(New 13/8/03)

3 Versions

Three new injection moulded plastic kits from Mirage, one the C7P artillery tractor, one a personnel carrier and another for a German recovery version. All include some etched brass parts and look good. All based on the T26 chassis, which Mirage seem to have managed to use to the utmost.

Cromwell Models Gulf War subjects

(New 13/8/03)

Combat Ready

New in the Combat Ready series come some very neat resin models to 1/76, and all very easy to assemble, yet also still loaded with good detail. Probably the best small scale T 55, in terms of having it all right, with little additional effort from modellers, plus the Type 69 variant as well, with laser rangefinder and rear turret stowage basket along with the mudguard mounted lights common to this version.

For allied forces then how about the LAV 25 and perhaps pride of place goes to Challenger 2 complete with all the extra armour panels and IFF panels seen on them in Iraq.

Milicast Churchills

(New 13/8/03)

Seen new at MAFVA Nationals

On the Milicast stand at Duxford were yet more in their excellent series of Churchills. All resin cast in 1/76, these are really neat. Find a good AVRE, the Dieppe variants and a good Mk VII plus the Crocodile Trailer.

New 1/72 Sdkfz 263 from Roden

(New 5/7/03)

Roden Models

From the Ukraine, Roden have followed their first kit of the IS3 by tackling the German 8-wheel armoured car series. Actually the second release, I have now seen the latest one, the 263 Command vehicle. I'll do a fuller review in Mil Mod, but suffice to say it is a neat injection moulded kit which will go together well.

New Transfer sheets in 1/35 and 1/76

(New 5/7/03)

Fingerprint Designs

It's been a bit of a gap since their last release, but Fingerprint Designs have added 2 new 1/35 scale transfer sheets, and a third is a combination of both, but reduced in size to 1/76 scale. The 1/35 set 1 has markings for StuG Abt 177, 184 and 185 plus some tactical signs, side numbers and other bits and pieces, while the 2nd set has StuG Abt 189, 190 and 192, plus a different set of general items. Both of these are all combined (and more examples of each) in the 1/76 sheet. In small scale enough for dozens of models.

At the same time they have at last reprinted their first ever sheet, in 1/35, for internal stencilling on German AFVs.

SHQ Shermans

(New 19/4/03)

New Releases

News from SHQ comes in the form of no less than 7 different Sherman packs added to their range, and all have parts for alternative versions, giving a total of something like 16 different variants between them. They look very goo, all in metal, and all to 1/76. All the hull types and engine decks are represented, including the uparmoured 'Jumbo', and they have done the HVSS equipped M4A3E8, which is good for the recent set of Korean War transfers from AFV-Decals.

More British figures from AB Figures

(New 19/4/03)

AB Figures

Though not new, I recently got hold of a number of their new sets, and one not so new one. To tackle that first, though available for about a year now, is a complete gun crew for the British 5.5in gun, and they do make the 5.5 as well, sold separately. An eleven man crew, plus separate ammo boxes, a stack of shells, signals cable reel and shell carriers all included. Add these to the gun and you have a self-contained diorama.

Then for vehicle crews, look out for 2 sets to add crew to a Ram Kangaroo, and how about a set of British tankers "bombing up". Another has a British tank crew bailing out, with one helping pull his mate out of the hatch.

Imprint Models 1/50 T-80UK

(New 5/4/03)

New Wargamers Series

First in a new range of resin models, aimed at the currently popular 28mm wargames market. Well cast in resin, with some nice detail, it done has some simplification for resin production, but I have to say I really like the end result. I gather the Challenger 2 is also available now, and there is a Warrior on the way. Well produced and an interesting subject in a more unusual scale. It seems that there are a variety of opinions over 28mm scale being 1/48 or 1/50, I've seen both quoted. I suspect the difference between them is not enough to worry most people.

Minitanks new "Dingo" in 1/87

(New 5/4/03)

New Modern German Recce Equipment

Two recent models from Roco had grabbed my attention when I first saw them announced in their catalogue. Now on sale are both the Fennec and Dingo recce cars. Both four wheelers, but the Fennec has a very futuristic look about it, with narrow, angled windows and low slung body. The Dingo, (not to be confused with the WW2 British one) has something of the Hummer about it, only bigger. Only accessory parts are wing mirrors and aerial mounts, so very simple straight out of the box. Available in the UK via The Turntable.

Milicast do Aunt Jemima in 1/76

(New 24/2/03)

New Resin Model

Milicast keep expanding their huge range of WW2 models in 1/76, and two recent additions, which can be bought as a pair, or as each individual pack, a mid/late production M4A1 plus an Aunt Jemima mine clearing set. Able to get the mine roller equipment by itself means you could add it to any of your favourite Sherman kits in 1/76. Both very well cast, and the whole thing is very impressive.

Interesting to note that Milicast have also completely revised their web site, and I have to say it is much much better than the original one.

UM Models 1/72 SU-76

(New 24/2/03)

New Injection Moulded Kits

Yet another new series of injection moulded plastic kits from Eastern Europe, they started with the BT series, and have now moved on to the SU-76. Actually 2 different kits, the basic SU-76 with a closed-in fighting compartment, and the SU-76M, with an open, and neatly detailed, fighting compartment. My examples came from Pol Models.

New range, Extra Detail, 1/72 accessories

(New 24/2/03)

PDI Model Supplies...

Are importing a new range of small scale diorama accessories from Australia. Most in colour printed card. All very neatly produced and very useful for loading trucks etc. Covers WW2, Vietnam and the present day. Check out the PDI Model Supplies web site for more details. http://www.pdi-model-supplies.com.

New Transfer sets from AFV Decals

(New 30/11/02)

New sets for 1/76 and 1/35 models

New from AFV-Decals in Sweden come 3 new sets for 1/76 & 1/72 scales plus another 7 sets in 1/35. For the small scale enthusiast then 2 sets for the IDF and another for Korea. All are well printed on good quality transfer sheet. You will need to carefully cut out the individual items from the sheet, and trim the edges. The Korean set is very welcome, and a much neglected subject area with some very colourful subjects, some included in this set. Enough for 17 complete vehicles in the Korean set, including 9 M4A3E8s. The IDF armour Part 1 cover 1948 -1973 and has M9s, Staghound, M4A1 and M51 Shermans, Centurions, M48s and others to give 22 complete vehicles. In the Part 2 set, another 18 including various Merkavas, and for the M60A1 perfect for the Combat Ready one due from Cromwell Models.

In 1/35, Israeli Shermans (5 machines), the M113 Zelda (7 machines) which includes the Vulcan, Chaparral and M578 Cargo, another for 4 Merkavas, then 10 Waffen SS AFVs on the Western Front (includes TigerI, Tiger II, Panthers, 251s and Kubel among others), then SS Armour on the Eastern Front (11 of them, including Panthers, Tigers, Pz III and IVs among others), then Tiger Is, with 10 complete one ranging from Tunisia, Russia, France and Italy, and lastly Panzer IV H and Js, enough for 8 of them.

Important point of this range is that they feature sets of markings for complete vehicles, so give you all you need. They give their references, are well produced, and now some great new subject areas (that means I'm still itching to start some Korean models!)

PDI Model Supplies

(New 24/11/02)

Mail Order House

A new Mail Order supplier to me is Phil Smith at PDI Model Supplies. I heard from Phil that he is now handling the small scale series of Part Photo Etch sets as well as the turned gun barrels by Armo.

There are loads of other things in their catalogue, including aircraft subjects, but other ranges they handle that will be of interest to modellers in whatever scale, they import a range from Mexico, named Greif. A long list of accessories and conversion parts, mainly for 1/35 but some small scale as well on the list. Add other product lines such as the Cavalier 1/35 resin zimmeritt sets, MIG productions figures/conversion parts and pigments, Precision Models range and many others. An unusual item I've only ever heard of is Celluclay, a modelling clay often mentioned in US publications. Worth checking out their list. Look at http://www.pdi-model-supplies.com

Recent Roco Minitanks...

(New 24/11/02)

The Turntable

News from the UK importer for Minitanks are recent releases as well as new stock of some older ones as well. These include a T55, but it is a re-issue of an older model, and not really up to their modern standards. However, a new version of one of my all time favourite models in any scale is their Willys Jeep, but in a blue plastic, complete with markings, for a US Air Force example. Beautiful little model, and the blue really makes a change.

More co-operation with a Russian manufacturer of a 1/87 model, and a very nice Elefant now on sale under the Roco banner.

New Combat Ready
(New 8/08/02)

Modern Combat Ready from Cromwell Models

With the continued popularity of the 1/76 Combat Ready series from Cromwell, more and more of their original range are now being released in the simplified format, but without losing any of the detail. With the Gulf War as a theme, recent releases had been the Spartan and Sultan, but the latest two are the T72B and the M109. Both have only about 7 parts each, but you need to see castings like the T72 turret or the detail on the front of the M109 hull to wonder at how they manage to get such fine resin pieces not only to cast, but also to be removed from the moulds without breaking. Good stuff and more on the way.

New 1/35 conversions from Master Models
(New 26/10/02)

GMC Conversions

Keep a look at for a new range of resin conversions for the GMC truck. Made to go with either the Tamiya or Italeri kits, depending on whether you want hard or soft- top cabs. Beautiful quality castings, produced to a high standard. Made in France but being distributed by D'Office. First two are a short wheelbase version, and the other (my favourite for now) is the longer chassis, with much altered rear body, and mounting the 40mm Bofors. With the gun included, and etched brass detailing on the gun sights, it really is a beauty.

Milicast on the 'Net
(New 26/10/02)

Milicast.com

Earlier in the year (2002 that is) Milicast finally had a large illustrated catalogue of their huge range of 1/76 resin models and figures. Now they have at last got their web pages up and running. Order on line, and take the chance to see the list of this huge range, with models that manage to keep improving their own standards. You will now find a link against their entry on the Manufacturers Page.

Part 1/72 Photo Etch Brass sets

(New 10/08/02)

Part Sets

I recently got hold of a couple of these PEB sets for 1/72 armour. One is for T34 track, and the other a set of zimmerit for the Revell Panther G. These brass sets for small scale armour are not as common as their 1/35 brethren, but the list from Part is growing steadily. I got a couple of examples from Pol Models, who are stockists here in the UK. The zimmerit set for the Panther is really superb. Easy to just fit the pieces straight onto the kit, and very accurate fit. End result looks great to me. As for the T34 track, I shall try this on the new Revell T34/85 kit. I was pleasantly surprised just how easy these were to do, a credit to the designer. Contact Pol Models for a full list. Available from Pol Models, 64 Cumberland Road, London, W3 6EY. You can also e-mail them at polmodels@aol.com.

New 1/72 Kits from Ace Models

(New 16/04/02)

2S1 and MT-LB

Among the recent releases from Ace Models come two more of their injection moulded kits of modern Soviet equipment. Both use what is essentially the same chassis, though it is lengthened for the 122mm SP gun, the 2S1. Therefore you will recognise the sprues and running gear from whichever model you buy. The rest is different of course.

With the limited run injection moulding process there is some limitation in the quality of the mouldings. They are not as crisp as the likes of the current small scale models from Revell. However, with some basic cleaning up prior to assembly, the end result is very acceptable, and I found myself needing a bare minimum of filler. One of the plus points in these new ones is the inclusion of a small etched brass fret with some extra details on. These include, in both cases, the swim vanes that fit to the rear of the tracks. The original plastic parts are still on the sprues, and they are poor. The etch replacements make a good comparison. Easy to fold and fix into shape, and they look good once in place. These feature on both of these models. Equally, some tie-downs on the roof of the MT-LB can have the moulded plastic "lumps" removed and the etched parts put in place.

These take a bit of experience to get the best results, but once done look very effective. I am a growing fan of the Ace range. Thanks to Ace via Simon Barnes for my examples of these two.

New 1/72 Transfers from Archer Fine Transfers in the USA

(New 27/03/02)

A whole series of Dry Rub Down Transfers

It's always nice to get a pleasant surprise. Recently this has come in the form of a new range of small scale transfers from Archer Fine Transfers. They have already established a good reputation for 1/35th scale sheets, which to date I have not had a look at. However, Woody has sent across some examples of their latest range in 1/72 scale.

Well, I am impressed. Dry rub down transfers have often, in my experience, shown a tendency to break if not applied absolutely correctly. If you fail to rub down fully, often difficult on an uneven surface, they can break, and thus ruin the individual transfer. I found with these that adhesion over a random selection of pieces off different sheets was excellent. Plus the actual print stayed intact on its carrier and stayed on the model without breakage, even if rubbing it down was in an awkward position. They then adhere to the model and any "undulations" very well indeed.

Lots of variety in German markings, as well as some Russian T34 markings, Allied Stars (in yellow or white). Some, such as the German tactical markings, are tiny individual marks, with hundreds on a sheet. Also available in different colours.

Look at for more detailed comments within Small Scale Scene in Military Modelling, but these are really very good. Available direct via Archer Models. See the "Manufacturers" listing for their contact address and a link to their web site.

New 1/76
Pz IV Bridgelayer

(New 9/02/02)

New from SHQ

Amidst a number of Panzer IV variants from SHQ comes the Pz IV Bridgelayer, based on an Ausf D chassis. Cast in metal, the bridge is available by itself, just add it to their Ausf D kit. At Trucks and Tracks they had it on show with one carrying a bridge while crossing a second bridge already laid. It looks really impressive.

At the same time, all 3 subjects are combined on a 1/76th sheet, and which also includes arm of service signs, vehicle stencils, names, registrations for a variety of vehicle types, bridging circles, red cross signs and more. Look out for these. The Web Site for Fingerprint Designs is a link off the "Manufacturers" page.

New UK Importer for 1/87 Roco Minitanks

(Updated 31/10/02)

The Turntable

The Turntable are currently the major UK importer for Roco Minitanks. There have been a good number of new releases in recent months, and I hear from Howard that some older ones have recently come back into stock as well. Among recent releases is the MAN Multi, the German Army equal to our DROPS system. The demountable body-flat works with the mechanism of the model. It is a beautiful model, and a photo was included in the column in Military Modelling in October 2002.

Another unusual model is the Keiler mine clearer. On the M48 chassis, this is essentially a modern version of the old Flail tank, with the cylinder carrying revolving chains being on an arm that is folded back over the hull when not in use, but extended out front to clear the path of mines. They do this one in both basic green or also a UN 'white' finish.

Look out for news of the latest releases within Small Scale Scene in Military Modelling. There is no web site, but there is an e-mail contact at Futureplanes2000@yahoo.com. Minitanks now available then, from Howard Hookham at The Turntable, 11, Belle Vue Terrace, Blackwood Hall, Luddendenfoot, Halifax, Yorks HX2 6HG.

2 new ranges of 1/76th AFV transfers

(Updated 23/01/02)

AFV-Decals and Starmers Armour

Look on the Manufacturers page on this site for contact details of two new ranges of AFV transfers, one here in the UK and the other in Sweden. Different in style but both worth looking out for.

Starmers Armour come from Mike Starmer Peter Freeman here in the UK. Some may be aware of Mike articles in Tankette. Four sheets to date, two for the BEF and the other two for North Africa - a set of air recognition roundels in different sizes, and the other for US "Stars and Bars" as seen on US vehicles in North Africa and on into Sicily and Italy. Latest addition, on plain paper rather than transfer sheet, are British early war Civilian style number plates for a variety of AFVs.

NEW in January 2002 come 4 new sheets, all of US stars and circles. Two sets in yellow and another two in white. Each sheet contains a good number of individual stars and surrounds, which are separate so you can use them with or without to your choice. Intended for North Africa and Sicily time period. The difference between the pairs of sheets are the sizes, with one sheet having larger sizes and the other having the smaller sizes. Still loads on each one.

AFV-Decals are from Sweden and are notable for including sets of markings for complete vehicles. For example, no less than 33 different vehicles in a German set for armoured cars, half-tracks and Panthers, and then another 32 vehicles in an Afrika Korps set.

DES Resin add 1/35th Autocar

(New 23/09/01 )

US Truck

DES managed an impressive new model at Euro this year, with a US Autocar tractor unit and a 10ton trailer to accompany it. They are sold as separate kits as usual. A made up example looked superb and kits were on sale. Only "rushed" bit are the assembly instructions which are "temporary" and will be redone in their usual style. Well done to DES another impressive resin model.

At Euro Militaire in September 2000 they displayed a set of 3 separate resin models for a French 6-horse gun team, limber and ammo limber, all designed to go together, and with their French 75mm gun. These are now all available, made up from 3 individual kits: one for 6 horse, another for the limber and the third for the ammunition caisson (the gun would be a fourth).

1/76
New "Combat Ready"

(Updated 06/08/02)

Cromwell Models

More new releases from Cromwell in their Combat Ready range, including some sets of three vehicles which are all differently stowed. Though aimed at wargamers with their simplicity, these are proving very popular with "modellers".

New out are a couple more modern subjects, the Spartan and Sultan, while a Humber a/c and a Rolls Royce a/c join the WW2 list. Hummel and Nashorn are ready, and due soon is a superb bit of casting with an Israeli M60A1 where the moulded on detail on the turret will blow you away! (I've been lucky and seen a pre-production casting)

Others include the Porsche turreted King Tiger, complete with a beautifully done zimmeritt finish. I have to say that a zimmeritt finish comes out much better on resin models than on metal in my experience. Look out also their KMm8 half track plus Sfh18 150mm gun in travelling position. More news of these and others will be coming up in Small Scale Scene, within Military Modelling Magazine.

1/76
New from Gramodels

(added 09/09/01)

Gramodels

Graham Baker has had Gramodels in production for many years. One of his most recent 1/76th resin models is a first (I think), of the huge French Char 2C. It is not a complex kit, but it's sheers size makes it very impressive. Nicely detailed and it goes together well.

1/72
Assorted ranges from
Blitzkrieg Models
(added 20/05/01)

New Dealer

Blitzkrieg Models are a new dealer to the UK, but Ivan, who is the man behind it, has already gathered in some interesting ranges of models. You may have heard of MarS (from Poland) and Art Models (from Belgium). He is also keeping a couple of others which I have already featured in Mil Mod but at Folkestone he had ranges from Retromodels (in the Czech Republic) with a 1.5ton Opel Blitz and from Armo (from Poland) comes a 1/72nd range of models that includes the Minenraumer, that strange mine exploder seen at Kubinka, with the Pz I turret, and as already done in 1/35. More details to come in Mil Mod..

Available from Blitzkrieg Models, PO Box 50, Ludlow, Shropshire, England, SY8 2WH. You can e-mail them, ivan@blitzkrieg-models.fsnet.co.uk.

1/72 Einheits Diesels from ZV Models

(added 17/06/01)

New German Trucks

ZV Models are a new range of 1/72 injection moulded plastic kits from the Ukraine. Thanks to Pol Models here in the UK who have imported them for letting me in on these. If you build small scale and like German subjects, you will have to have these. It's great when something manages to exceed your expectations. These are delightful. Delicately detailed and moulded, no major problems for construction straight from the box, and the end results all you could want. There are a couple of faults with the instructions on the basic GS truck, with two small detail plates on the suspension units moulded as separate parts (but linked to the arm by the casting sprue) which need fitting but are not shown as such on the instructions. Nit-picky issues and experienced modellers should not have any problems. The wooden body on the Command Vehicle is just magic.

I suspect most will want two of each at the very least - one in Panzer Grey and another in the late war 3-colour camouflage. I don't see how you could fail to love these. I wonder what they will do to follow these?!

"Part" models from Poland already do an equally superb etched set to give really fine detail, including such as the instrument panel and so on.

1/76
CMSC
(update 18/08/01)

CMSC

Some more Land Rover variants now on sale from CMSC. Mainly resin castings but with detail parts in white metal. As ever, quality is first class. Look out for new "bag and header card" packaging on these smaller kits. Still includes a colour photo of a finished model as a reference as well as the instructions.

Three modern tankers. Two of these are Tanker versions of the Foden truck. They are doing 2 versions, both the 6-wheel and larger 8-wheel types. Main castings are in resin and the details fittings are in metal. Make up a treat. Then a third tanker, the US M49A2, which is the same as the one done in 1/35th by AFV Club, but this time in 1/76th. Mix of metal and resin parts again.

Their Chieftain Bridgelayer (choice of bridges), is available. It is actually 3 kits, the AVLB itself and then the two types of bridge. The bridges are simple, but beautifully done, with clear instruction sheets. The AVLB itself is a complex assembly job. Lots of parts, a mix of resin, metal, plastic card, rod and brass rod pins. Look out for a fuller review within Mil Mod, but suffice it to say this is one of the finest multi-media models you will find anywhere. Something special to enjoy making and have in your collection at the end of it.

CMSC do a "waterline" version of their superb Land Wasser Schlepper, and a two man crew is available as a separate pack. This is a beauty - it comes with thin brass wire for the handrails around its roof, needing to be threaded through some 28 minuscule brass posts, which are pre-drilled ready for you. Just be prepared to be patient, and be careful - there are no spares if you drop one on the carpet! End result is superb.

CMSC are at 36, Gray Gardens, Rainham Essex, RM13 7NH.

Fingerprint Designs 1/76th and 1/35th Transfers

(updated 15/7/01)

New Transfer Sheets

After their most colourful transfer sheets to date, for British Armoured Divisions in NW Europe, Fingerprint Designs have released more new transfer sheets. There are 3 new 1/35th sheets, 2 of which are then repeated in 1/76th. First is a well thought our sheet with 9 different styles of German vehicle crosses. By combining them together there are 20 different possible variations, details of which are all given on the backing card. Second are German miscellaneous vehicle markings, such as shipping labels, convoy markings, "Inflammable" warnings and the white swastikas used as air identification markings. There are a few extra on the 1/35th version of this sheet, but which are too small for 1/76th. The third subject is only in 1/35th, and has loads of items for US vehicle stencilling, both internal and external. Three are some markings specific to the M8 a/c, data plates and what I suspect may be a most popular feature of this sheet, various instrument gauges, each in 3 different sizes. They may be small but you couldn't paint it yourself this good.

MarS 1/72, Miniscale Factory 1/76 & Armo 1/72 Models
(updated 22/06/01)

New Ranges

Blitzkrieg Models are a UK importer who are bringing model ranges to the UK, with MarS from Poland and Miniscale Factory from Japan. I'll give a bit more detail in a forthcoming issue of Military Modelling Magazine, and include them in Small Scale Scene's main column. Suffice for now to say two interesting ranges, with some unusual subjects, and both ranges feature polyurethene resin castings of a high standard.

Third comes Armo, by Jadar Models. An example here is the Minenraumer, in 1/72nd, the unusual mine exploder vehicle found in the Kubinka collection, and done in 1/35th by Armour Models (Historex Agents). Very neatly produced kit on an unusual subject.

Firing Line Models, 1/76th kits

(updated 25/02/01)

1/76th Models

This range is not actually new, but I have only recently seen one to have a go with. Firing Line took on the old Lead Sled range of 1/76th models, making many updates to them. In addition, they have kits of their own, in this case an Austin K5. The major components of this kit are still relatively unusual for being all done in etched brass. Wheels, mudguards, exhausts and a few other small parts are in metal.

The etched brass I have to say is among the highest standard you can expect to see, and I have so far found it easy to work on. Even the chassis comes this way, and needs to be folded and then soldered into shape. It's fair to say my first impression was of some doubt on how well I would get the chassis to come together. Having done that bit as a starter, and still some way to go with the remainder, it came out very well. Much better than perhaps I had expected, but that is from doubt on my own skills with the brass, not on the way it is made. The fact that it worked well speaks a multitude for how well this has been produced. All the channels are of course as close to scale of the real thing that you will get. I'll give a fuller report when it is finished within "Small Scale Scene" in Military Modelling.

You will need to take a bit more time and effort than usual but the results are worth it. Available from Firing Line, whose details are listed on my "Manufacturers" page, along with a link to their web site where you will find a full list of their products.

1/76th
New 'Combat Ready' range from Cromwell Models

(updated 20/05/01)

Wargames Models (or not?)

Released as a budget priced series of simplified Wargames models, this new range of kits from Cromwell Models is growing steadily. There are in the region of 100 different models now available. The track units or wheels are cast in with the hull. The solid chunk of resin which filled the space between the track units on the early releases is being removed, and not present on the latest releases. As an example, a super little Stug III C/D is a single piece casting. The Marder II is just 2 pieces, the gun barrel and then the complete vehicle. You need to see the detail on these to believe they can be moulded like this. Watch out for more details and photos in the magazine column in the next couple of months. A great case of a so-called Wargames models being very acceptable for many modellers/collectors.

Recent additions to the range include a beautiful Tiger 1 (late), complete with zimmeritt finish and 'battle damaged' side skirts and exhaust covers. Looks great yet just three parts (hull, turret and gun barrel) Look also for sets of 3 vehicles, each with different stowage. Examples are the Humber Scout, Austin Tilly and the Bedford MW

Examples of unusual subjects include a T34/76 1940, a Guy Mk 1/1A armoured car, and the Pz IIb come to mind.

And the prices? Well examples are the Stug at £6.75 or a pack of 3 Renault R35s for £11.95. Details for Cromwell Models, and a link to their web site can be found on my 'Manufacturers' page.

Look out for such as the British Sherman II (El Alamein version) and the early Pz Iib.

1/76th
from BW Models

(added 3/06/01)

BW Models

This now large range of metal models by Barry Wright features on post WW2 British softskin equipment. Two new chassis added to the range in recent months are the Leyland Martian and the Bedford TM.. There are different variants of each available so check their catalogue for details. The new TM is perhaps one of my favourites from BW. I think I fell for it when I opened the box and saw the detail on the truck b
